One of the most common challenges I encounter in high-end San Francisco real estate is the delicate art of modernization. Buyers want the open floor plans, radiant heating, and smart-home capabilities of a 2026 build, but they crave the charm of a 1910 Edwardian.

I have seen countless renovations, and the most successful ones never erase the home's original narrative; they elevate it.

My Principles for Historic Modernization:

• Preserve the Facade: Keep the street-facing exterior historically accurate. Update the windows, but maintain the original casement styles.

• Open the Rear: While the front remains traditional, I encourage opening the back of the house with floor-to-ceiling glass to modernize the layout and maximize light.

• Contrast is Key: Pair original, ornate plaster moldings with ultra-minimalist kitchen cabinetry and monolithic stone islands. The tension between old and new is what creates breathtaking interior design.
